The power of being seen and heard in the shared experience of creating and relating.

There’s something seriously special about group art therapy. It’s hard to explain, but when people come together to make art, something shifts. Maybe it’s how everyone starts to resonate as a group, the honesty in what’s shared, the threads of connection, or the quiet magic that happens when you’re creating side by side.

After years of teaching art and now working as an art therapist, I’ve realised that running groups is my thing. It’s where I work seamlessly in the holding of space for people to show up, create, and connect. Whether it’s adults, teens, or little kids, something remarkable always unfolds.

I’ll never forget a group of teenagers I worked with in a high school over two terms. Every week, they showed up with curiosity, openness, and willingness to explore. By the end, they stood a little taller. You could feel how being seen and heard had changed something inside them. Showing up for each other is the real gift of group work.

For teenagers especially, making art isn’t just about creativity it’s also a life skill. It’s a way to self-regulate, to make sense of feelings, to slow down when things feel too much. Art-making gives you space to breathe, to express, to come back to yourself.

In group art therapy, the magic is everywhere; in the mess, the stories shared, the raw creativity in the moment of making. Something profoundly healing takes place, both individually and collectively, as the canvas becomes a kind of mirror, reflecting what’s going on inside and in-between us.

Perhaps that is the heart of it all: being witnessed, safely, while you find your own rhythm within the group.
